For Immediate Release:
San Francisco, California: In celebration of Black History Month and Black food culture, we invite you to the 2nd annual Hey, Auntie 2025! Gumbo Cooking Contest.
Gumbo Social is thrilled to announce the return of the Hey Auntie! Gumbo Cooking Contest in 2025, celebrating the rich culinary traditions of gumbo and the creativity of home cooks and professional chefs alike. This exciting event invites participants to showcase their gumbo-making skills while fostering a sense of community, culture, and competition.
After the Black History Month Parade come to the Bayview Opera House to experience the contest and cheer on your favorites. Attendance is free, but you can also purchase a tasting ticket and vote for the gumbo that deserves the Hey Auntie crown!
Don't let the name fool you, "Uncles" who can cook a mean gumbo will also have a chance to compete.

"The first year of Hey, Auntie! in 2024 was a proof of concept—an opportunity to show how an event like this aligns with our mission as a small business to promote what we do and celebrate our food culture. It’s more than just a platform to share gumbo; it’s about bringing people together, pushing our mission forward, and creating opportunities. For instance, one of last year’s winners is now leaving her full-time job to pursue entrepreneurship full-time. That’s a win for us—helping someone gain the confidence to start something they might not have otherwise. This contest is about preserving and elevating Black food culture, fostering entrepreneurship, and continuing to shine a positive light on the Bayview community." —Dontaye Ball, Chef-Owner of Gumbo Social
